The Mean Fiddler is proud to introduce Chalan Williamson (USA) as their guest resident guest international musician for the month of February 2010.  Chalan will be entertaining guests in the Fiddler bar from Wednesday through to Sunday.

Chalan is an accomplished singer/guitarist with genres ranging from rock n roll, blues, jazz, folk rock to country.  He is wonderful entertainer, interacting with the crowd and involving them in a fun night of music and song.

Chalan was born in a small town named Jamestown just 90 miles south of Buffalo NY.  His talents as a musician grew starting out a young age with piano and soon after guitar. He began playing small bars generally the ones his parents were familiar with, for little or no money, but kept battling the odds and eventually moved to Houston where he cleaned chemical containers for almost a year.

Realizing that he was unhappy in his current job he moved on to playing music full time. In the summer of 2001 he moved to Louisiana where he lived just 45 minutes from New Orleans. He started gigging 6 nights a week before his 20th birthday.  After a few years he started on the road back to New York. After about three years and many appearances all over the Western New York area, he landed a gig in Europe. He is now a well known performer in many different European country’s including Denmark, Switzerland Sweden just to name a few.

Handpicked

21 March at 01.00 PM

Live in the Woolshed

When you think of fiddles, mandolins and banjos, what music do you think of Folk, country, bluegrass? Anything can happen, depending on the influences the players bring to the mix. When you combine the infectious and personal side of country with the traditional sounds of Celtic and infuse them with the contemporary influence of rock and funky syncopation you will get a combination that may or may not work. Steve Passfield's Handpicked Band not only has it working a treat but also is connecting in a big way with audiences around town and on tour. Like life itself, Passfield’s original songs bear the influences of many styles and experiences, with an unpretentious delivery and lyric that says the things we all feel. And with take away melodies you can't forget. Along with a touch of forgivable idiocy and a stirring grasp of the entertainment ethic, Handpicked have their audiences dancing and foot tapping into the night. More than a decade of performance has given birth to three fine CDs and a string of awards in National Band Competitions. The band has evolved into a valid part of the Australian musical landscape with regular appearances at festivals across this big land and overseas with promise of much for the future. With the ability to deliver credible and engaging performances in both genres, Steve Passfield's Handpicked Band has an unfair advantage in winning over audiences at both Country and Folk festivals. Handpicked are a show worth leaving the TV for.

History: Steve Passfield had the brilliant idea back in 1988, following many years of performing in various different bands from Kempsey to Sydney, to try and start up a band that was versatile and fun. Handpicked was born in 1988 just at the end of the bi-centennial celebrations and, in it's infancy, worked the crowds at The Vinegar Hill woolshed most Saturday nights in a lively bush dance theatre show that involved people both willingly and unwillingly in a lot of fun. The band slowly grew and changed along with Steve's passion and vision for music until what is now a very entertaining and fun mix of many styles of music, but with a strong emphasis on all things Aussie! Steve's original songs have become an important part of the Handpicked story with references to his 6th generation first fleeter family and his farming, grazing and timber getting ancestors from his hometown Kempsey. It's his way of delivering a little fresh rural influence on anyone that happens along. His energy and efforts to bridge the gap between the city slickers and the rest of the country beyond the freeways and the great divide is infectious and captivates an audience. Humorous and good spirited interaction with the crowd in any situation, and the ability to read a crowd's mood, are characteristics that few performers possess but Steve certainly does. Dale Carnegie in his bestselling book, How to Win Friends and Influence People said that "diplomacy is the ability to tell somebody to go to hell in such a way that they look forward to the trip", get into a Handpicked show and you'll go to beyond the great divide and the freeways and certainly enjoy the trip!

Mike Carr and The Harrisons

28 March at 01.00 AM

Live in the Woolshed

When Mike Carr accepted his award for the APRA Song of the Year in January 2006,it was the beginning of wonderful ride.

The award for Real People, which he co-wrote with Melinda Schneider for her latest album Family Tree, was his first Golden Guitar , although he has received numerous nominations.

Mike is now, unquestionably, one of Australian music's most exiting singer /songwriters.

From an impeccable musical pedigree (his father was the famed Warren Carr of the 60's R&R era), Mike has been carving his own way in the country music industry for the past 5 years.

As a songwriter he is right up there with the best, having written and co- written some of the most popular Australian country songs of the past few years. These include THE ANZAC, New England Highway and Get Loud (Adam Brand) & Real People, Wearing White (Melinda Schneider).

As a artist, his self titled debut album, released in 2003, yielded the singles While the Wife's Away, Up on His Shoulders while his follow up album, ”Legend” produced the hit song “She’s Gone”.

Mike has built up a considerable following due to his live performances. From touring Australia with super stars Terri Clark and David Lee Murphy to performing as an invited guest on “The Global Showcase” in Nashville, he has won hearts all over the globe.

The past 2 years has seen Mike focus on his songwriting. He was recently signed to the roster of Pacific International music, a Nashville publisher.During this time Mike’s song “When did all the flowers die” has been recorded by new Nasville signing Mitzy dawn to add to his cuts with Adam Brand, Graham Connors, Kirsty Lee Akers, McAlister Kemp just to name a few.

Mike is now sought after performer at the Tamworth Country Music festival and has become a permanent fixture at CMC Rocks the Snowys having shared the stage with the likes of Taylor Swift and Joe Nichols, not to mention Shannon Noll..

There’s country music. And then there’s Travis Collins.

No cowboy hat. No big, shiny belt buckle. Yet the 25 year old is an award winning Australian country music artist whose blend of contemporary country/rock draws big crowds across the country.

Following in the footsteps of the likes of Keith Urban and James Blundell, Travis Collins won the prestigious Toyota Star Maker title in 2004. He was 19. ‘Start The Car’ showcased Trav’s evolving style of contemporary country/rock.

“I offer a bit of a musical cocktail – even more so in my live performances. Whoever’s listening gets to go on a journey with me – a rock infused country journey. But it’s heartfelt ride. My songs offer a piece of me – the good and the bad.”

Country Music Sundays in the Woolshed

COL FINLEY has achieved quite a trifecta in the past year; marriage, baby and Paradise. Paradise (his brand new album) is simply splendid; pure magic in superb musicianship and genuine songwriting genius. Col keeps a handle on the cheeky boy of previous albums in the opening track My Stuff – his ‘stuff’ has been summarily dispatched to the garden after a fight – and the closing track Dirt keeps touch with the grass roots hardworking country fans. Don’t Come Over Till I’m Over You has my vote as one of the best songs of his career – a beautiful heartbreaker. In Her Eyes and Paradise are delightful songs rejoicing in finding true love. The Way Boys Do reveals the essential core of friendship. Honorary mention goes to the backing – a powerhouse of talent and attention to detail. Col, as always, puts heart and soul into his performance and the passion he shares in Paradise reveals the maturity and contentment of a truly happy man.
